This Is Not A Love Story by Mary Hargreaves

Today I am delighted to be hosting the blog tour for This Is Not A Love Story by Mary Hargreaves.

This Is Not A Love Story is a book for anyone who’s ever wished they were perfect.

It’s a book for anyone who feels like a failure.
And it’s not a love story, it’s a real story. And it’s hilarious.

Maggie Gardiner isn’t good enough. She had six glasses of wine at a work conference, woke up covered in curry and has accidentally ended up living with the boring guy who was supposed to be a one night stand. Something has to change.

Every other twenty-something on Instagram seems to have their sh*t together, so why doesn’t she? And so she makes a list. When she’s ticked off every item, she’ll become Maggie 2.0 – the best version of herself, and the one she wants to be. Won’t she…?

  1.       Go vegan. It worked for that girl on Twitter.
  2.       Take up yoga – that woman she hate-follows swears by it
  3.       Start practising mindfulness – all those people can’t be wrong…
  4.       Quit smoking. It’s not 1999

This Is Not A Love Story by Mary Hargreaves – published by Trapeze Books on 11th June 2020 in paperback and ebook.

My thoughts

Would I give my age away if I said could this be the Bridget Jones of the 2020s? Perhaps, but it really doesn’t matter because this novel was hilarious, uplifting, sweary and features the most adoreable, genuine and loveable leading lady i have read in quite some time. Maggie is without doubt a walking disaster. She swears a lot, gets drunk at the most inappropriate times and acts on impulse without any consideration for the consequences. Frustrated with her life in a job she hates, with a boyfriend who drives her mad and dealing with a family who she constantly disappoints, well, Maggie has reached breaking point. We get to see the fallout in all it’s wonderful glory.

Driven by the ‘perfect’ lifestyles of women who seem to have it all and spend most of their time sharing pictures of their perfect life and perfect figures on Instagram, Maggie is determined to become the very best version of herself. She will find the perfect job, hone her zen with yoga and become a better, calmer version of herself. If only she could like herself a little bit more along the way and stop, stop behaving like such an idiot.

Maggie is of course fabulous and we watch her find her way, cheering and cringing at various intervals along the way. This was an absolutely gorgously funny read but also reminded me that we should be true to ourselves and learn to love ourselves just the way we are.

This Is Not A love Story is a brilliantly funny debut that I’m sure will strike a chord with women of any age.

Thank you so much to Anne Cater of Random Things Tours for inviting me to take part in this blog tour. Thanks also to the lovely team at Trapeze Books for sending me a review copy – it was so funny it actually caused me to snort tea out of my nose! Haven’t done THAT in a long time.

  1. I love your review, and I so need to check this book out. I loved Bridget Jones and if this is the Bridget Jones of 2020s, sign me up. Plus, I can always use more books with humour in my life right now.

  2. You’ve pretty much summed up everything I loved about this book. It was so funny I had to tell my husband what was happening! I loved it and loved being part of the tour too!
